In April Cornwall Council introduced free swimming for over-60s.
Numbers to date show that this is a runaway success, with Cornwall’s active over-60s enjoying 28,046 free swims in the first quarter of year. The numbers are amongst the highest anywhere in the UK.
Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth Charlotte MacKenzie said:
“Free swimming for the over-60s in Cornwall is a huge success. I have written to congratulate Cornwall Council and urge them to introduce free swimming for children up to the age of 16 which is also proving immensely popular where it has been introduced.’
Free swimming receives financial support from the Department of Culture Media and Support as part of the UK’s preparations for the 2012 Olympics.
