Labour can win Truro and Falmouth

In news on April 12, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Charlotte’s campaign in Falmouth got underway this weekend in the spring sunshine.

Charlotte MacKenzie said:

“We are talking to voters everyday in this new three way constituency.

“I hope people will vote, and vote for what you believe in.

“Everyone is tired of cynical old politics, like the Liberal Democrats here trying to steal Labour’s support. Labour can win here on a swing like that which made Julia Goldsworthy MP in 2005.

“Everyone who wants to keep the Tories out is best off voting Labour – Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said he will work with the Tories in a hung Parliament.”

Charlotte’s supporters were joined by Treasury Minister Lord Paul Myners.

Labour’s Charlotte MacKenzie welcomes budget

In news on March 28, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Charlotte MacKenzie, Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth, today welcomed the Chancellor’s budget statement.

Charlotte MacKenzie said: “This Budget secures the recovery – rather than putting it at risk.

“It builds a future based on growth and jobs – rather than leaving people to a decade of austerity.

“It sets out a clear plan to halve the deficit while protecting frontline services. The Conservatives refuse to match our pledge and continue to conceal their plan.

“We will make these choices in a fair way – standing up for the many, not the few.

“I particularly welcome the help for first time buyers which means nine out of ten people buying a home for the first time won’t pay any stamp duty.”

Charlotte MacKenzie challenged local Conservatives to come clean about their party’s plans: “The Tories must say how they would meet the challenge that we have set in this Budget.

“How much would the Tories cut from spending in 2010/11? They won’t say.

“How quickly would the Tories halve the deficit? They won’t say.

“By how much would the Tories reduce the structural deficit? They won’t say.

“We’ve set out our plan. It is time for Tory candidate Sarah Newton to come clean.”

The hunting act 2004 – five years old today

In news on February 19, 2010 at 10:12 am

Five years ago, on 18 February 2004, the Labour Government’s Hunting Act became law, ending the cruelty and suffering of hunting with dogs.

Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth Charlotte MacKenzie said:

“In this rural constituency, I hear both sides of the arguments for and against the Hunting Act. But the majority of people who have contacted me on this issue are asking me to confirm that I will vote against any proposed repeal that would allow the cruelty of hunting with dogs to return.

“The fifth anniversary of this hard won Labour law is a day of celebration for those who support animal protection, and believe it is an ethical as well as environmental cause. Rather than trying to turn the clock back on hunting with dogs, those seeking a sustainable future for rural communities, as I do, need to look to the future.

“It would not be a good use of parliamentary time to bring forward a proposed repeal of the Hunting Act. It shows just how out of touch the Tories are with the issues that matter most to people, including those in rural communities:  jobs, the economy, health services, schools, housing, and transport.

“But if a proposed repeal of the Hunting Act were brought forward, I will vote to continue the ban on this cruelty, and I have also pledged to support a wider range of animal protection measures by ‘voting cruelty free’.”

Fairer water bills for Cornwall

In news on December 9, 2009 at 5:05 pm

Charlotte MacKenzie today welcomed the findings of the Walker review on water charging, published on 8 December. A final decision on the Walker review’s proposals rests with the Government.

Charlotte said: “There are two things I particularly welcome in Anna Walker’s final report. Firstly, practical proposals to help more people on lower incomes pay less for water. Secondly, recognition that South West water costs are disproportionately high, and practical measures to address infrastructure requirements – for example through a one-off national contribution – so that the burden does not fall unfairly on people here.

“I called for these issues to be addressed fully and fairly at both stages of the review. I also raised these concerns with water Minister Huw Irranca Davies MP when I met him in September. I’m very pleased that Anna Walker has come forward with practical options to address both these issues.”

Labour makes the difference for Cornwall

In news on October 11, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth, Charlotte MacKenzie, spoke in the children, families, and schools debate at the Labour Party conference.

Here’s what Charlotte said:

‘When I went into my Twitter account this morning there was a tweet from someone in Cornwall saying:
“Hmm, I like Gordon’s new policies… Maybe I should actually vote Labour.”

All of us campaigning for Labour to win have our track record of achievements backing us. Where I live before the minimum wage was introduced four out of ten jobs were advertised at below the level at which it was first introduced. I’m delighted to be speaking to you conference the day before this year’s increase to the minimum wage, which has made a difference for thousands of people in my home constituency.

I am going to talk about education – because we all know there is a connection between low wages, lower expectations, and the Tories’ educational failures which meant many children left school with few or no qualifications.

Labour’s investment in education in Truro and Falmouth means we now have 11 children’s centres, mostly purpose built. In Truro, where I’m a councillor, this helped to support the development of three new community centres.

There are new primary school buildings, a new secondary school, new college buildings, a new university – which means that the number of 18-24 year olds in Falmouth has increased by 80 per cent since 2003 – a new medical school based partly at Cornwall’s main hospital site in Truro, alongside which a new dental school is being constructed to provide the NHS dentists Cornwall needs.

None of this would have happened without Labour thinking big, investing in our future, and supporting Cornwall’s case for the European funding which helped to build the new university.

All of this happened despite rather than because of the local authority – whose Liberal Democrat leadership until 4 June presided over deteriorating reports on children’s services which still have some serious issues to address. One of the first acts of the incoming Tory majority executive on 4 June was to place Cornwall Council’s schools for the future bid on hold – they have since decided to proceed with the bid.

Locally and nationally, let’s say clearly to people “if you want change, choose Labour’s continued investment in public services”.’

Charlotte will vote cruelty free

In news on September 2, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Charlotte MacKenzie, Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth, has pledged her support for Vote Cruelty Free, a new non-partisan coalition of animal protection organisations working to put animals on the political agenda.

The alliance has sent its manifesto to all candidates announced for the next General Election and asked them to show their support for the issues raised.

Charlotte MacKenzie said, “I will be voting cruelty free. This MPs’ pledge covers a huge range of issues which matter to people in Falmouth and Truro who care about animal protection and welfare. You are welcome to contact me on 01872 267675 or via my website about specific animal protection issues. I challenge fellow candidates of other Parties to join me in signing this pledge to vote cruelty free, and in particular to confirm they would not support Tory plans to reverse the hunting ban.”

A Vote Cruelty Free spokesperson said, “Animal protection is an issue close to the UK public’s heart but this is often not reflected in current political debate. It is fantastic that Charlotte MacKenzie has shown she believes in animal protection issues as much as her potential future constituents in Truro and Falmouth; we are calling on all candidates to follow her lead by pledging their support for Vote Cruelty Free.”

Vote Cruelty Free comprises the BUAV, Compassion in World Farming, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), League Against Cruel Sports and Respect for Animals. It covers a broad range of animal welfare issues including wild and marine animals, animal experimentation, cruel sports, the fur trade and farming.

Vote Cruelty Free is urging all candidates to pledge their support for the initiative. Voters can track candidates who have signed up by visiting the website.

Cornwall – we love the NHS

In Uncategorized on August 17, 2009 at 11:52 am

Labour’s candidate for Truro and Falmouth, Charlotte MacKenzie, talks about Cornwall’s NHS in the week when people across the UK responded to negative Tory comments by adding their voices to say ‘we love the nhs’.

Charlotte would like to hear your stories about Cornwall’s NHS.

A cleaner, greener Cornwall

In Uncategorized on July 15, 2009 at 9:07 pm
A huge expansion of wind power, home insulation and “smart” electricity meters are among measures being planned by Labour.

Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth Charlotte MacKenzie has given her support for the Government’s Energy White Paper, which was released on Wednesday.

“I welcome moves to help us cut emissions – it is our responsibility as a country to do our bit.

“But what is vital is that these moves are not just good for the environment. More fairness for bill payers and more jobs in green industries are vital. I am pleased that there will be more help for people to make their homes greener and save money.

“The boost for green industry is good news for jobs in Cornwall – we are the UK’s first low carbon economic area.”

Ed Miliband said:

“I want to thank Charlotte MacKenzie for all the campaigning she has done pushing the government to take action on climate change.

“Our Transition Plan pushes the pace of change. We’re providing new ways of helping people be smarter with the energy they use and enabling UK firms to grow by leading the world in advanced green technologies.  We will protect people on low incomes and reduce our dependency on fossil fuels imported from unstable parts of the world.

“I want the UK to be the first major developed country to convert to low carbon living, and the first to reap the benefits.  With less than 150 days left until global climate talks in Copenhagen, and with the challenges of coming out of recession, our Transition Plan will build a better, cleaner, greener UK.”

Cornwall – meet the need for affordable local homes.
