Good for Cornwall’s businesses, pensioners, and families

In news on December 9, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth today welcomed the Chancellor’s pre-budget report as good for Cornwall’s businesses, pensioners, and families.

Charlotte MacKenzie said:

“The pre-budget report will help businesses in Cornwall in three ways. Firstly, by continuing the direct support to businesses and measures such as empty property rates relief. Secondly, by confirming that unlike the Tories Labour will not freeze public sector pay - spending by public sector workers is important for Cornwall’s retail and tourist industries and housing market. Thirdly, real investment in digital and low carbon businesses will provide an additional boost to sectors which are also being backed for development through convergence funding

“Pensioners will benefit from the 2.5 per cent pension increase next April and continuation of measures such as the winter fuel allowance (which most people have just received for this year) and free travel for over-60s.

“Families – and particularly those on lower incomes – will benefit from measures announced today including child and disability benefit increases, free school meals for more children, help for people to keep their homes, lower rent increases for tenants (announced by Housing Minister John Healey MP), and support to help 18-24 year olds into jobs and education.”

Great news for Cornwall

Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth today welcomed the Chancellor’s pre-budget report as “great news for people in Cornwall”.

Speaking after the Chancellor’s announcements, Charlotte MacKenzie said: “This statement is great news for people in Cornwall. Reducing VAT will help everyone shop more cheaply – it is good news for local retailers and small businesses, and will encourage UK holiday-makers. I’m delighted that the Chancellor is providing more help for over-60s through the decision to increase pensions, pension credit, and the winter fuel allowance. It is good news for families that child benefit and tax credits are increasing, and there will be additional support for people facing job losses or mortgage arrears. With 3000 families on the local housing register, I particularly welcome the fact that investment in social and low cost housing is being brought forward. We cannot put tackling climate change on hold and I am also pleased that £535 Million investment in low carbon developments is being brought forward and an additional £100 Million is being allocated to support home insulation and energy efficiency.

“We are facing a difficult period economically and Labour will do all that we can for jobs and to support those on lower incomes. The Chancellor demonstrated that Labour is providing the economic leadership the country needs to weather the international downturn and turbulence in financial markets. The Tories are divided on how to respond – their candidate here supports tax cuts while their leadership wants Labour to slow down our efforts to stimulate the economy – everybody can see the Tories just lack the experience or capability to form a government.”

Sure start for Cornish children

In Uncategorized on March 24, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Charlotte MacKenzie today welcomed an independent evaluation report which shows Sure Start has a positive impact on the lives of children and families, and the announcement of more funding for children’s centres and services.

The report found children behave better and are more independent if they live in areas with Sure Start Children’s Centres. Other findings show that parents have more positive parenting skills and provide a better home learning environment for their children, helping prepare children to do well at school and make the most of their talents. The government is on track to meet its pledge of having 3,500 children’s centres by 2010, one for every community.

Charlotte MacKenzie, who wants to be the first MP for the new constituency of Truro and Falmouth, said: “Many children are already being given a better start because The Lighthouse in Falmouth and Penryn Children’s Centre are supporting local families.”

“The Children’s Centres funding will mean new buildings and additional support for parents and children at many local schools and community centres. In Truro this includes Tregolls, Archbishop Benson, and Bosvigo schools, Truro Nursery School, and the community centres at Malabar, Malpas, and Trelander.”

“The latest funding will also mean more community outreach workers in the most disadvantaged areas. Outreach workers will provide home visiting and other support that will make a real difference to families who find it difficult to access services.”

“Together with the Chancellor’s budget announcement of increases in Child Tax Credit, these developments will make a real difference for local children.”
