Labour can win Truro and Falmouth
In news on April 12, 2010 at 6:29 pmCharlotte’s campaign in Falmouth got underway this weekend in the spring sunshine.
Charlotte MacKenzie said:
“We are talking to voters everyday in this new three way constituency.
“I hope people will vote, and vote for what you believe in.
“Everyone is tired of cynical old politics, like the Liberal Democrats here trying to steal Labour’s support. Labour can win here on a swing like that which made Julia Goldsworthy MP in 2005.
“Everyone who wants to keep the Tories out is best off voting Labour – Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said he will work with the Tories in a hung Parliament.”

Charlotte’s supporters were joined by Treasury Minister Lord Paul Myners.

Labour’s Charlotte MacKenzie welcomes budget
In news on March 28, 2010 at 11:11 pmCharlotte MacKenzie, Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth, today welcomed the Chancellor’s budget statement.
Charlotte MacKenzie said: “This Budget secures the recovery – rather than putting it at risk.
“It builds a future based on growth and jobs – rather than leaving people to a decade of austerity.
“It sets out a clear plan to halve the deficit while protecting frontline services. The Conservatives refuse to match our pledge and continue to conceal their plan.
“We will make these choices in a fair way – standing up for the many, not the few.
“I particularly welcome the help for first time buyers which means nine out of ten people buying a home for the first time won’t pay any stamp duty.”
Charlotte MacKenzie challenged local Conservatives to come clean about their party’s plans: “The Tories must say how they would meet the challenge that we have set in this Budget.
“How much would the Tories cut from spending in 2010/11? They won’t say.
“How quickly would the Tories halve the deficit? They won’t say.
“By how much would the Tories reduce the structural deficit? They won’t say.
“We’ve set out our plan. It is time for Tory candidate Sarah Newton to come clean.”
Good for Cornwall’s businesses, pensioners, and families
In news on December 9, 2009 at 5:44 pmLabour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth today welcomed the Chancellor’s pre-budget report as good for Cornwall’s businesses, pensioners, and families.
Charlotte MacKenzie said:
“The pre-budget report will help businesses in Cornwall in three ways. Firstly, by continuing the direct support to businesses and measures such as empty property rates relief. Secondly, by confirming that unlike the Tories Labour will not freeze public sector pay - spending by public sector workers is important for Cornwall’s retail and tourist industries and housing market. Thirdly, real investment in digital and low carbon businesses will provide an additional boost to sectors which are also being backed for development through convergence funding
“Pensioners will benefit from the 2.5 per cent pension increase next April and continuation of measures such as the winter fuel allowance (which most people have just received for this year) and free travel for over-60s.
“Families – and particularly those on lower incomes – will benefit from measures announced today including child and disability benefit increases, free school meals for more children, help for people to keep their homes, lower rent increases for tenants (announced by Housing Minister John Healey MP), and support to help 18-24 year olds into jobs and education.”
Cornwall Council better off with Labour
In news on November 26, 2009 at 5:08 pmCornwall Council’s three year funding settlement was announced today. In 2010/11 the Council will receive an additional £9.278 Million, an increase of 4.5 per cent on funding for 2009/10. This is also the first time that local authorities have received a settlement for three years rather than one.
Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth Charlotte MacKenzie said:
“Cornwall’s frontline services must benefit from this additional funding from Labour in Government. The funding announcement shows that scare-mongers predicting cuts in Council funding couldn’t have got it more wrong. I will be watching closely to see that this money is passed on to frontline services, which is where it helps people most. The Council says it will be able to make further savings as a result of the unitary reorganisation, so this 4.5 per cent boost in funding should mean council tax increases next April can be kept reasonable.”

Free theatre tickets for under-26s in Cornwall
In Uncategorized on February 10, 2009 at 11:46 amLabour parliamentary candidates in Cornwall, together with Andy Burnham, Eddie Izzard and Kevin Spacey are praising Labour’s offer of free theatre tickets for under 26 year olds.
Prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth Charlotte MacKenzie today welcomed the consortium of venues in Cornwall and Plymouth offering free theatre tickets for under 26 year olds, including the Hall for Cornwall and Helford Theatre in Truro. They have signed up to Labour’s free theatre scheme which is offering 618,000 free theatre tickets across England for the next two years.
Charlotte said “I am so proud that local theatres have taken up this scheme as it is so important that we make sure as many young people as possible have the chance to go to the theatre. This is what Labour is all about – giving new opportunities to young people.
“I have seen myself how positively young people respond to the theatre, and theatre studies courses. I know that this scheme will help ensure young people in Cornwall get the chance to experience some brilliant productions, and I look forward to working with my local schools and collages to ensure as many under 26 year olds as possible know about the scheme and apply to local venues to get their free tickets.
“Having people like Eddie Izzard and Kevin Spacey offer their support is great, and I recommend people view their video clips and contact local venues as soon as possible to get their free tickets”

Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport said, “Labour has always believed in making the best in life available to everyone. We all know how a visit to the theatre can be a life-changing experience, and it’s incredibly exciting to imagine our theatres full to bursting point with young people. This new scheme sees Labour values in action
“This scheme allows us to unlock seats that might otherwise have remained empty, giving us good value for money, as well as ensuring we open up theatre to as many people as possible. In the same way we opened up access to our great museums and galleries, we are now extending this principal through to the performing arts, and I congratulate all those theatres taking part.”
Eddie Izzard said, “I think free theatre tickets for young people is a great idea, especially as things are getting tough financially right now. I am very pleased that the Labour Party has launched this scheme for under 26 year olds. We have a great British theatrical tradition and I hope people take advantage of this offer.”
Consortium of participating venues in Cornwall: Hall for Cornwall, Truro; Carn to Cove (representing 62 village halls); The Acorn Arts Centre, Penzance; Sterts Theatre, Upton Cross; The Keay Theatre, St Austell; Helford Theatre, Truro College. And Theatre Royal, Plymouth.

Labour leads the way combating climate change
In Uncategorized on October 22, 2008 at 10:23 pmLabour has taken action on the threat of climate change. Our Climate Change Bill will set a long-term legal framework for reducing emissions for the first time. Labour believes a global deal will only be possible if Britain plays its part, leading the way with other developed countries.
Labour’s prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth Charlotte MacKenzie says
“The Bill will make us the first country in the world to put carbon reduction targets into law.
“The appointment of Ed Miliband MP as Britain’s first Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change gives action on climate change a stronger voice in Government and shows our commitment to taking on one of the greatest challenges the world faces.
“I’m absolutely delighted that the Government has listened to the local groups in Cornwall, including Truro and Falmouth Labour Party, who urged them to increase the target to reduce greenhouse gases, and to include aviation and shipping emissions in our efforts to tackle climate change.
“This is not something that can be put on hold because of the credit crunch. Growing the green sector will encourage new investment in businesses and home energy in Cornwall, and strengthen the local economy.
“Our greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 will not be 60 per cent lower than 1990, but 80 per cent lower. I’m pleased that the government has taken this action and that the target will be set in law.”
Longservice award for Labour Party member
In Uncategorized on December 21, 2007 at 2:43 pmPrime Minister Gordon Brown personally signed the framed certificate with thanks for Mrs Joy Capper’s 50 years service as an active Labour Party member.
After 30 years as Labour Party members in Surrey, where Mrs Joy Capper and her husband Ken were both councillors, they decided because of Ken’s ill health to retire to Cornwall in 1984. They both immediately became active members of Truro Labour Party. For ten years Ken Capper was Treasurer, a task which Joy took on when Ken died in 1995. Mrs Joy Capper served as treasurer for a further ten years until 2005.
Speaking at the presentation Truro Branch chair Veronica Kelly said “Both Joy and Ken always carried out the their duties good humouredly and conscientiously. In their old constituency when they were leaving the local Herald newspaper reported that two of the most respected and much loved members were leaving the area to retire to Cornwall. I think those sentiments can be repeated again tonight when we presented Joy with this long awaited much deserved award.”
Truro and Falmouth Labour Party held their Christmas Party at the Railwayworkers’ Club where Truro Branch meetings have been held for many years.

Labour selects Charlotte MacKenzie for Truro and Falmouth
In Uncategorized on November 18, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Charlotte MacKenzie has been selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for the new Truro and Falmouth constituency.
Commenting after her selection Charlotte MacKenzie said:
“Cornwall needs Labour representation. In Truro and Falmouth, the Liberal Democrats drew up plans which only expect one in three new homes to be affordable, despite the fact that regional plans recommend two out of three new homes should be affordable in areas of greatest need.”
“An independent inspection this year confirms that – on the Liberal Democrats’ watch – Cornwall’s adult social care, children’s services, and fireservices only meet minimum requirements, a deterioration since 2005 when the Liberal Democrats came into control of Cornwall County Council. This is despite the fact that the Labour Government has given the County Council above average, above inflation funding increases.”
“The Liberal Democrats once gained ground partly because they advocated a new politics of consensus. In Cornwall, it is the Liberal Democrats who now have Tweedledum and Tweedledee squabbles, with their MPs evidently feeling unable to support their councillors’ decisions on issues such as waste management and councillors’ allowances. No wonder seven of their councillors have left the Liberal Democrats.”
“I will be urging everyone who feels let down by the Liberal Democrats to support Labour because of our track record in Cornwall. Thanks to Labour’s investment in Cornwall’s future we have new schools and a university; we will be getting a new purpose built healthpark, and a dental school in Truro; there will be further investment in Falmouth docks; the A30 has been widened at Goss Moor; and unemployment has fallen by two thirds. Neither opposition Party has effective influence on Government decisions affecting Cornwall.”
“I will continue to serve my local community as a Truro councillor, and I hope to continue as Chair of Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change, a position to which I was re-elected recently by the Board.”
“This is the only constituency where I applied for selection and it is the only place that I would want to represent in Parliament.”
