Council must act to keep post offices open

In Uncategorized on September 23, 2008 at 11:55 am

Those campaigning to save local post offices responded with dismay to the news that Post Office Ltd is going ahead with all of the proposed closures in the Carrick area.

Charlotte MacKenzie, who is Labour’s candidate for MP in Falmouth and Truro said: “This is a blow for everybody who worked hard to make the case to keep local post offices open. It is very disappointing that Post Office Ltd is not making changes to the proposals in the light of comments received.

“Two out of three communities in this constituency are among the top 15 per cent most deprived UK communities for access to services and housing. We will continue to make the case for better local access to post office services. I hope local councils will step in to prevent some closures, as has already happened in some other areas.”

“I am also writing today to Postwatch and Consumer Focus to get Post Office Ltd’s decisions looked at again.”

Hundreds call for local post offices to be saved

Hundreds of Penryn shoppers took part in the Post Office consultation last weekend.

Local campaigners gave out postcards encouraging people who want to keep their local post office open to write to Post Office Ltd before 1st September, when the consultation will close.

The campaign is being led by Labour’s Charlotte MacKenzie, who said:

“Many people are upset by the proposals of Post Office Ltd to close some local branches. I’m encouraging everyone to make their views known through the consultation.

“Post Office Ltd is working to clear criteria and must consider the objections it receives. Some post offices elsewhere have been saved where a strong case has been made by the whole community working together.

“It is important Post Office Ltd have good current knowledge about local bus services, the impact on everybody who relies on the post office and on other businesses in the area. The final decisions will not be made until after the consultation. It is possible there will be some changes to the plan despite the fact that it is clear there will be some closures.”
