At Truro and Falmouth Labour Party’s Christmas Party on Wednesday 19 December, local Labour Party member Mrs Joy Capper was surprised and delighted to be presented with a much-deserved long service award.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown personally signed the framed certificate with thanks for Mrs Joy Capper’s 50 years service as an active Labour Party member.

After 30 years as Labour Party members in Surrey, where Mrs Joy Capper and her husband Ken were both councillors, they decided because of Ken’s ill health to retire to Cornwall in 1984. They both immediately became active members of Truro Labour Party. For ten years Ken Capper was Treasurer, a task which Joy took on when Ken died in 1995. Mrs Joy Capper served as treasurer for a further ten years until 2005.

Speaking at the presentation Truro Branch chair Veronica Kelly said “Both Joy and Ken always carried out the their duties good humouredly and conscientiously. In their old constituency when they were leaving the local Herald newspaper reported that two of the most respected and much loved members were leaving the area to retire to Cornwall. I think those sentiments can be repeated again tonight when we presented Joy with this long awaited much deserved award.”

Truro and Falmouth Labour Party held their Christmas Party at the Railwayworkers’ Club where Truro Branch meetings have been held for many years.
