A Labour parliamentary candidate is urging people of all ages to take part in the Youth Citizenship Commission consultation on lowering the voting age to 16.
Charlotte MacKenzie, who wants to be the MP for Falmouth and Truro, said “I remember wanting to be able to vote when I was doing A-levels. I knew that voting helps to determine what happens in the future. I felt that I had as much understanding of the issues as people who were able to vote. I didn’t want to leave all the decisions to older people. I’m pleased that it is Labour Party policy to lower the voting age to sixteen, but what really matters is finding out what voters and young people think.”
There is more information here – the consultation is open until 20 January 2009.
